CSSJ Event 2022 Reflection: Friday’s Heritage Tour
As our pilgrim group — 112 sisters, associates, agrégées, and partners in mission — gathered on July 8 for the 2022 Federation Heritage Tour, we received a warm welcome from Sr. Mary M. McGlone (Carondelet-St. Louis). Sr. Mary, author of Anything of Which a Woman is Capable, and Called Forth by the Dear Neighbor, a two-volume history of Sisters of St. Joseph in the United States, opened our tour with a historical perspective. She spoke of the first six sisters who traveled from Lyon, France in 1836, and shared details about their journey: leave-taking from Lyon, a 49-day ocean voyage from Le Havre, France to New Orleans, and, finally, the trip up the Mississippi River to St. Louis.

Sister Helen Thomas Colbert, CSJ, embraced life with excitement, passion and joy – a life poured out for others in a spirit of strength, generosity and love. As she would often recall with a laugh: “Growing up with eight brothers and two sisters, I lived community life long before I became a Sister of St. Joseph! My mom taught me what it means to be strong!”

We Stand With Rise St. James
The U.S. Federation of the Sisters of St. Joseph joins with other faith based organizations to support Rise St. James, in opposition to the construction of a $9.4 billion industrial plastics complex by Formosa Industries. The complex will consist of 16facilities and is expected to double emissions in St. James Parish – a town where 14% of the land is already owned by chemical companies. Our partnership with Rise St. James is motivated by our commitment to fighting environmental racism, and focusing on the ways in which racism, migration, and the climate crisis intersect.
