“With Courage, Strength and Faith:” Remembering Sr. Helen Thomas Colbert

Sister Helen Thomas Colbert, CSJ, embraced life with excitement, passion and joy – a life poured out for others in a spirit of strength, generosity and love. As she would often recall with a laugh: “Growing up with eight brothers and two sisters, I lived community life long before I became a Sister of St. Joseph! My mom taught me what it means to be strong!”

We Stand With Rise St. James

The U.S. Federation of the Sisters of St. Joseph joins with other faith based organizations to support Rise St. James, in opposition to the construction of a $9.4 billion industrial plastics complex by Formosa Industries. The complex will consist of 16facilities and is expected to double emissions in St. James Parish – a town where 14% of the land is already owned by chemical companies. Our partnership with Rise St. James is motivated by our commitment to fighting environmental racism, and focusing on the ways in which racism, migration, and the climate crisis intersect.

Happy Feast of St. Joseph

Happy Feast of St. Joseph

Today we celebrate the feast of our beloved Patron. Joseph has always served as a model and inspiration for us but even more so in the past year that has been filled with pain and challenges for so many. As we watched our sisters, families, and friends succumb to the coronavirus, we prayed to St. Joseph to accompany them in death. We asked Joseph, the Patron of Refugees, to console those at our closed southern boarders. We raised up the model of Joseph the Worker to give hope to displaced workers and protect essential workers from harm. As we move ahead into this new year, we turn now to Joseph, the Dreamer. May he enable us to keep the dream of an inclusive beloved community alive. May he inspire us to live out the dream of Jesus that all may be one.

‘It’s Timeout!’ — Rise St. James Fights Formosa Plastics

In August 2019, the U.S. Federation of the Sisters of St. Joseph released a statement recommitting to create communion at the intersection of racism, migration, and climate crisis. Our mission of unifying love and healing calls us to examine how these issues compound to affect our most vulnerable communities. As part of this commitment, the U.S. Federation is working with Sharon Lavigne, the leader of Rise St. James, a group fighting against the construction of the Formosa Plastics Complex in St. James Parish, Louisiana. Additionally, Sharon will be our featured speaker for our Earth Day 2021 programming.
