Arriving at the airport in Manhattan KansasOn August 20, the US Federation Novitiate convened with three novices in Concordia, Kansas.  Novice Director Betty Suther and Assistant Novice Director Mary Jo Thummel welcomed Sisters Mary Alice Collar (St Louis), Kristine Fernandez (Toronto) and Jean McKinney (Boston) to a year of deepening their spirituality and expanding their skills of discernment, especially as it relates to their call as Sisters of St. Joseph.

Eclipse watching Srs. Patty Johnson and Kristine FernandezAugust 21 was the total eclipse which passed through Kansas.  The novice awoke early and with their novitiate team drove to Atchison, Kansas to hear an inspiring speech entitled “Eclipses, Einstein, and the Fabric of Our Souls” at the Monastery of the Sisters of St. Benedict.  It was a time for building relationships and getting to know each other.  We were somewhat disappointed by some rain and clouds but we did experience portions of the eclipse and were grateful for the time together.

A barbecue to welcome the novices

On August 22, we reviewed the basic orientation materials, met the sisters at the Concordia Motherhouse, and then had a terrific barbecue with all the local sisters, at Manna House where the novices will be living.

The novices have been welcomed and begin their transformative work on August 23 when the “home” novice directors return to Boston, St. Louis, and Toronto.
