“How come no one ever told me that was God? I never knew that.”

When Sister Pat described “flow” to her nephew, he was stunned to learn he had already experienced it, having been totally given over to something—carried, transported, absorbed—until the ego seems to dissolve. Her response to him was a challenge: "So now that you know, how will that influence your life?"

Sister Pat speaks of "flow" as unioning love. Jesus knew this. The early sisters, associates and agregees have always intuited this, "moving toward profound love of God and neighbor without distinction from whom we do not separate ourselves."

Most religious communities, like the CSSJs, began as movements, called to contemplate the world, notice the emerging future, discern its blessing and then pour all the resources of time and talent to midwife the newness. This is something we have embraced since our foundation as the Congregation of God’s Great Love.

With our modern understanding of quantum science, we know there is a spiritual field connecting us so that even one small movement can evoke huge change in the whole web of creation – just like Fr. Medaille said more than 350 years ago.

In our day, it is obvious that trying to run the world from a view of separation is killing the planet and its people. Great thinkers are asking who will be the holding places for sensing the emerging future? Who will collectively tend to the consciousness of the planet, ride in the wave of oneness and carry a whole new way of being to the shore?

This is the aim of our vocation.

So now that you know this, how will it influence your life?

Perspectives | Panel Response
After Sister Pat's presentations, a three-person panel shared unique perspectives that expanded our collective reality. The panel members were Sister Liz Sweeney, SSJ ("seasoned member"), Sister Sarah Heger ("newer member") and Jackie Salas, St. Joseph Worker ("partner in mission"). Open mic time was available as well.

Both panelists and attendees tapped into the "wave," sharing these inspiring thoughts:

  • Feel the ocean we're swimming in right now. We're swimming in the active dynamic of unioning love.
  • What we're experiencing here is the evolutionary urge of the future.
  • If it is a movement, it will be led by the Holy Spirit.
  • When we invite others to the party, we have to be ready for the party to change.
  • The flow is bigger than us. Our mission is for everyone.
  • Lightening, Thunder and a RainbowPulse Prayer Vigil

A group of event attendees gathered beneath ominous skies outside the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, to hold a prayer vigil in the wake of the recent violence and mass shooting that took place at the site. They felt “moved by the Spirit” to offer first-hand spiritual support and presence to the Orlando community.

"As Sisters of St. Joseph and ministry partners, we believe that our mission of unity and reconciliation is an important and necessary part of the healing process," said Sister Patty Johnson, executive director of the Federation. Read the press release.

Amazingly, at the conclusion of the vigil, the group was blessed by a rainbow. The blessing was made visible once again by a comment on the Federation Facebook page from a young man, who has connections to the Sisters of St. Joseph: "I may have a complicated relationship with religion, but as a gay man who was educated by the Sisters of St. Joseph, I'm so touched. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for respecting my brothers and sisters. You are all angels.
